Dawntreaders

Overview: The Dawntreaders/The Stormbringers/The Others/The Witchfolk
No other group has so many names and only the Magelords have generated more rumours, fears, and hopes. Unfortunately, the two groups are often confused with each other among the unlearned. But, one thing remains a constant belief, you need witch blood to be a wizard though having witch blood does not guarantee you can be a wizard...
Player Characters: Wizards need to have significant Dawntreader heritage. That manifests itself as both magical potential and physical appearance.
Appearance: Dawntreaders have pale skin that is prone to sunburning. Their eyes are vivid green or unusual variations of other colours - polite people would say "striking", others might use "weird" or "unnatural". Dawntreaders are the only people who have freckles. It is distinct enough that they are called 'witch-spots'. Old Dawntreader families practice tattooing - though on less obvious places then their ancestors. The tattoos are linked to ancient Dawntreader symbols that have lost their meaning over time.
Locations: Almost all people of significant Dawntreader heritage are found in Prealith. Wizards exist in other realms, but they are isolated individuals.
Known Characteristics: Dawntreaders are magical people. They tend to live in extended family groups or as lone individuals. Individuals can be found anywhere; but the extended family groups tend to live on the frontier as part of a network of villages. Dawntreaders have a very intense awareness of family - they know who is related to whom. Dawntreaders have an extremely high level of literacy and artistic abilities.
Rumoured Characteristics: The wildest rumours can be imagined. There are many people who fear the powers, or perceived powers, of the Dawntreader heritage. So, we will leave aside the rumours of prolonging lives to unnatural ages by drinking the blood of infants..... However, there are stories that emerge from those people who have actual contact with the Dawntreaders or old written records or rumours from elvish friends (the last being a very frugal source for some reason). The Dawntreaders were supposedly a sea people in ancient times. Evidence of their symbols decorate the earliest ruins/buildings of the great seaports. Scholars are almost certain that key port structures in Slavers' Bay are from Dawntreader magic showing unequaled knowledge of tides, currents, ....A branch of the Dawntreaders seem to bear this out as they practice 'sea magic'. This branch is supposedly different from the rest of the Dawntreaders; but, other than attitudes towards the ocean, no one else can see any difference. However, that attitude towards the sea is a fundamental difference between the two branches of Dawntreaders. As for most Dawntreaders, no other group seems to have a greater aversion - even fear of the sea. It has lead some scholars to theorize that the Dawntreaders of today are a different group that adopted the symbols from another group and that the elves confused two similar groups or just the 'Sea Dawntreaders' are the true ones. Either way, those knowledgeable of the eastern lands across the ocean and even the lands far to the west, claim Prealith is the only place where the Dawntreaders can be found. If there's a Dawntreader homeland outside of Prealith, none have found it. As for the tattoos, it is rumoured it is either bound to the person's magical ability or is the person's true name. Knowing the true name would give another magic user power over the Dawntreader wizard. As for power, it is rumoured that all Dawntreaders are bound in an organization that is carefully controlled and monitored by family elders. This organization supports and instructs Dawntreader adepts. It is even rumoured it controls who the Dawntreader person can have children with.... Outside of rumours, there are many legends surrounding the Dawntreaders of the past. The most common refer to the Dawntreader leadership of all the races to rid the world of a great evil. It also refers to the cost of this war being the total destruction of the Dawntreader homeland. Other legends link the destruction to the Dawntreaders becoming too powerful or arrogant and the Gods humbling them by destroying their homeland. Finally, there is the legend that the Dawntreaders are to once again lead in a war against a great evil as written in ancient prophecies. No matter what legend, they all include tales of incredible feats of magic by these ancient wizards. It is perhaps this level of power combined with its cost to the environment that makes elves somewhat reluctant to search their memories of what the original Dawntreaders were like....
