The Sea Wolves

Overview: The Sea Wolves were opportunists. With a lack of resources in their northern homeland across the Eastern Ocean, the Sea Wolves had to bring in more resources. If possible, they established colonies to resettle part of their population; if not, they raided, and if the potential opposition was too strong, they traded. Attacks against Prealith's cities were firmly rebuffed and the Prealith navy's response to raids on Prealith's towns and villages convinced the Sea Wolves to raid elsewhere. A significant number of Sea Wolves did settle in Prealith communities as traders and others established villages along Prealith's coast. The Sea Wolves experienced their greatest success with conquering the lands north of the Honnorgat River. Dzordanya was 'settled' first, then Kostandan, and finally Pargun. Sea Wolves tried to push into Tsaia but were turned back and had to retreat to Pargun's border. The Sea Wolves were forced back by a combined force of Magelords (who had recently consolidated their hold on Tsaia and Fintha) and elves. Most Sea Wolves seemed innately hostile to elves. A small minority of Sea Wolves reached an understanding with the elves and were allowed to settle in Lyonya and interbred with Old Humans to form the human population there.
Player Characters: Player characters with significant Sea Wolves heritage may play any non-arcane character - including Low Bards and Clerics.
Appearance: Sea Wolves tend to be taller than average, broad in build, with blonde or light brown hair, blue or green eyes and an angular facial shape. Most barbarian groups available to player characters have significant Sea Wolves heritage (see below).
Locations: Predominately found north of the Honnorgat River in Pargun and Kostandan. People with Sea Wolves ancestry are also found in Lyonya and throughout Prealith's coastal areas (areas settled by Sea Wolves and, to a lesser degree, the towns and cities). A number also chose (or were exiled?) to settle in Slavers' Bay and the Robber Coast.
Known Characteristics: Sea Wolves tend to be suspicious of all forms of magic - clerics need to emphasize "the blessings of the Gods" aspect to ease worries of nervous Sea Wolves. Some Sea Wolves settlements were forced to retreat from the coast during the "Great Fall" and many survived and re-established themselves inland - merging with other groups. Conditions -especially the isolation- resulted in these groups developing a "barbarian" mindset/culture. The Sea Wolves homeland is actually a large number of different tribal groups that are loosely related to each other. However, there is a distinct difference between the lifestyle and culture of the northern Sea Wolves (farmland poor) and the southern Sea Wolves (able to raise much of their own food). The northern Sea Wolves seem to be the ones more hostile to elves.
Rumoured Characteristics: It is rumoured the Sea Wolves encountered elves back in their homeland and the northern Sea Wolves had fought against them. Other scholars believe the hostility towards elves was an outgrowth of the first Sea Wolves struggles against the faerie creatures of Dzordanya. It could also be the result of an attempt to push into elven lands and encountering very effective elven resistance, elven magic, and the elven woodlands. After all, Sea Wolves and elven views of trees and what they are good for are radically different to say the least! It is also thought the Sea Wolves that settled south of the Honnorgat tended to be the more open minded southern Sea Wolves. It is believed, hopefully by many scholars, the groups that are descended from southern Sea Wolves are more open minded about other humanoids, human groups, scholarship, and even magic. Finally, it is thought that the Sea Wolves hostility, especially among northern Sea Wolves, to magic is from pitched battles against magical creatures and magic users back in their homeland.
